Misty of Chincoteague was first optioned for a movie in 1948. This announcement appeared August 13, 1948 in The Star Democrat. Marguerite Henry wove this into the fictional book Sea Star with the "movie men" that take Misty away. Sea Star was published in 1949. It's also mentioned in Dear Readers and Riders/Dear Marguerite Henry. The real Misty was living in Illinois with Marguerite Henry at the time.
The iconic Misty movie wasn't made until over a decade later in 1960 and released in 1961.
