In our dig through Marguerite Henry's papers at the The Kerlan Collection of Children's Literature we found a little more information about Phantom Wings's only foal. He was named Sandpiper and was born 1964, his sire died that same year. Sandpiper was sold to the Walker family of Bar-W Ranch on Ridge Road. This picture comes from an advertising poster for Pony Penning.
Sandpiper is listed on the family tree in the Pictorial Life Story of Misty. Marguerite Henry was looking for information on the descendants of Misty for the book. There was a letter from Greg Merritt about Sandpiper that had a little more information about him. Sandpiper was a good riding pony who was extremely intelligent and gentle. Ray Walker bought Sandpiper for his daughters Cindy and Susan. Susan Walker would ride him over to watch the Pony Swim. He was later sold to a farmer in Pennsylvania and the trail goes cold from there. Sandpiper's dam was owned by Ralph Beebe and she didn't have a name until Ray Walker gave her the name Nora after his wife. Amanda from Misty's Heaven and Rebekah from Hart’s Island Pony Ranch spent two days this week going through Marguerite Henry's papers at the The Kerlan Collection of Children's Literature at the University of Minnesota. We found a good bit of information on Misty and family to further our knowledge and fill in missing information. One of the things we found in letters was that Windy's first two foals, Sunshine and Cyclone, were sired by the Arabian Al-Marah Sunny Jim. Their sires were previously unknown so we're thrilled to fill in this part of the story of Misty's descendants.
Al-Marah Sunny Jim: https://www.mistysheaven.com/sunnyjim.html Sunshine was later the dam of the famous Misty's Twilight. Cyclone was a stallion and sired many ponies through his life. Sunshine: https://www.mistysheaven.com/sunshine.html Cyclone: https://www.mistysheaven.com/cyclone.html The picture is a Chincoteague Miniature Pony Farm postcard of Windy, Sunshine and Cyclone in 1975.
