Misty and Jiggs the Donkey

Jiggs was Marguerite Henry's donkey inspiration while she was writing the story of Brighty of the Grand Canyon. He lived with Misty at Mole Meadow in Wayne, IL. As can be seen in these pictures from the Pictorial Life Story of Misty.

Jiggs also played Brighty in the movie. The film studio donated a statue of Brighty to the National Park Service. Hoping that the statue survived the wildfire destruction of the Grand Canyon Lodge, or that it will one day be replaced.

Misty's Moonshine

7/19/2025

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Misty's Moonshine is the pony that the youngest member of the team rides. She was born in 2007 and Misty's Heaven admin Matt was the one to find her when she was born. Moonshine is the only Misty descendant on the team that doesn't descend from Misty II. Instead she descends from Foggy Mist who was Stormy's last foal. Moonshine's sire Cezanne was born on Assateague in 1989.

Moonshine was sold to North Carolina for a few years but returned in 2011 and soon joined the Drill Team. When not with the team she has competed in eventing. Moonshine has a sweet personality much like her late dam Misty's Desert Sun. She'll be getting lots of hugs from her proud "dad" Matt this weekend.

Look for Moonshine in this video from a performance in downtown Chincoteague last year: https://youtu.be/fEKcdByGDbM?si=9ZdXXenS0BwiIP3u

Misty's Thunderstorm

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Misty's Thunderstorm is a 2010 son of Misty's Irish Mist, who is also on the Drill Team. His dam Peaches and Cream was born at a farm on Chincoteague. Thor is a great great great grandson of Misty. He was born in Massachusetts and came with his sire to live in Virginia. Though he looks a lot more like his dam than his sire.

Thor has been a member of the Drill Team for many years, often alongside his sire. They appeared on the Today Show in 2018. Thor had an eventful trip to Kentucky Horse Park last year. He tried to woo the statue of Misty during a photo shoot and the next day dumped his rider after spooking and finished the drill by himself!

Chincoteague Surf N Turf

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Chincoteague Surf N Turf, born 2008, is ridden by the Drill Team's captain. Unlike the other ponies she isn't a descendant of Misty. Instead she's the granddaughter of ponies from Assateague. Her sire Chesapeake Powhattan's Promise was born on Assateague in 1998 and her dam Tidewater Millennium Surprise in 2000. She's a cousin of new Breyer model Surfer's Riptide. Surf's dam is a daughter of Riptide's sire, the famous Surfer Dude. Her sire's sire Witch Doctor was featured in a spring 1993 issue of Breyer's Just About Horses magazine.

Surf is a quintessential Chincoteague Pony, beautiful and talented. In addition to the Drill Team she's a show pony, a lesson pony and is willing to try whatever her riders ask of her.

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Misty's Sunfire is the solid palomino on the team. He was born in 2007 and is a half brother to Misty's Heart of the Storm who was featured yesterday. He's a great great grandson of Misty. Their dam is Misty's MayDay Twister who has a Breyer model. Sunfire is the only one of his dam's foals that shares her bright palomino color. His sire is Cezanne, born on Assateague in 1989.

Sunfire has been a member of the Drill Team for a large part of his life. He's a striking sight with his golden coat and flashy movement. In addition to his team duties he also competes in eventing.

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Misty's Heart of the Storm is the first foal of Misty's MayDay Twister born in 2005. Her sire is 2001 Assateague born Island Wildfire. She doesn't share Twister's coloring but in all other ways she's her mother's daughter. She got her name from the heart shaped marking on her side. She's a great great granddaughter of Misty and her dam has a Breyer model.

Heart has been a member of the Drill Team for most of her life. She has her own children's book and has done meet the pony events at the Chincoteague Library for years. Hart has a Cat's Meow piece and is pictured in Horses in Living Color by Barbara Livingston.

In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. Misty's Irish Mist is a full brother to yesterday's featured Drill Team pony Misty's Morning Glory. A great great grandson of Misty. He was born in 2007 and is by Assateague born Cezanne. His dam Misty's Black Mist has a Breyer model and he is her last foal. Irish was sold as a foal to the Rice family and went to live with them in Massachusetts after weaning.

Irish was a stallion for several years and sired four foals. He returned to his birth herd in 2013 along with his three sons. Irish was gelded, trained, and soon became a Drill Team pony. He also competes in eventing. Irish and his son Misty's Thunderstorm often perform together and will be at Breyerfest this year. In 2018 the two were on the Today Show.

In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Pony Penning, Lois Szymanski has updated her original book Out of the Sea: Today's Chincoteague Pony to feature more recent happenings with the Chincoteague ponies and its community. In the days leading up to the Drill Team's performances at Breyerfest we're featuring each pony on the team. First up is the oldest pony on the team Misty's Morning Glory! A great great granddaughter of Misty. She was born in 2001 and is a daughter of Misty's Black Mist. Glory’s dam has a Breyer model. Her sire Cezanne was born on Assateague in 1989. Glory is her mother's daughter in color, talent, and temperament. There were multiple news articles when she was born and the 2001 Pony Penning poster by Kevin McBride featured her with her parents. She makes annual appearances at McBride's Osprey Nest Gallery on Chincoteague.

Glory's had three foals and her daughter Misty's Red Dawn currently represents the Chincoteague Pony at Kentucky Horse Park. Glory has been a member of the Drill Team for most of her life. She was on the Today Show in 2018. She's pictured in the book Horses in Living Color by Barbara Livingston.

Misty II at Mole Meadow

7/4/2025

Misty II and her family visited Wayne, Illinois in spring 1996. She was invited to make a special visit to Marguerite Henry and Misty's former home of Mole Meadow. Misty II wandered the bowl shaped meadow where Misty had her birthday parties and entertained guests. She grazed in the meadow where her famous grandmother once did.
