This well loved 3 legged Misty was recently gifted to Amanda's "Misty army". She was played with by 2 generations of horse girls. Do you have a well loved Misty?
If you look closely at a picture in A Pictorial Life Story of Misty you'll see an unlabeled glimpse of Misty's sire Pied Piper. It's in chapter 8 "One to Grow On". He's in the background of the picture and this is a cropped version. He's the pony in the front.
Pied Piper was born in 1927 as he was reportedly 27 years old in 1954. Misty was most definitely not his only foal. There's no mention of Pied Piper when his daughter returned to Beebe Ranch in 1957 so combined with that and his advanced age it's assumed he had died by then. He was sort of replaced by his movie counterpart who often described as the "real Pied Piper". More about Misty's parents on our website: https://www.mistysheaven.com/mistysparents.html Misty of Chincoteague was first optioned for a movie in 1948. This announcement appeared August 13, 1948 in The Star Democrat. Marguerite Henry wove this into the fictional book Sea Star with the "movie men" that take Misty away. Sea Star was published in 1949. It's also mentioned in Dear Readers and Riders/Dear Marguerite Henry. The real Misty was living in Illinois with Marguerite Henry at the time.
The iconic Misty movie wasn't made until over a decade later in 1960 and released in 1961. Life magazine photo of Misty and Clarence "Grandpa" Beebe in 1957. Life was on hand to greet Misty's return to Beebe Ranch after living with Marguerite Henry since she was weaned.
Grandpa Beebe sadly passed away a month after Misty's return to Chincoteague. Not long before his death he rode Misty in an Armed Forces Day parade. They won a beautiful gold cup for prettiest pony in the parade! A little article from the Richmond Times Dispatch on August 18, 1946 mentioning Marguerite Henry working on a new book. The book was Misty of Chincoteague which was published the next year.
Birth announcements aren't just for people! 1994 birth announcement for great great grandson Misty's Chesapeake Bay. Chessie was a beloved lesson and children's pony who passed away in 2022. He's pictured here in 2008.
