This is Emma, the youngest pony to play Misty in the movie. The first photo is Emma with her dam. Emma appeared to be a bay, possibly a silver bay. The next is her after her bleach job with movie Phantom. Her natural dark hair still showing through on her face, which can be spotted in the movie The bleaching was done to make her look like palomino Misty. These photos are from The Pictorial Life Story of Misty in which Marguerite Henry writes about Emma.
Emma spent her post-movie life at Burton's Ranch (now Tom's Cove Campground). An article from 1965 described her as a brunette again after being bleached blonde for her leading role. She had a stall in the barn with her name above the door, it seemingly said Misty because the name Emma isn't mentioned. Would love to know more about her life!

Cute drawing of Misty that appeared in Florida Today on June 17, 1977. I hope Laura kept her love for Misty!
Three movie Mistys during the filming of the 1961 movie. The real Misty was in her mid teens and too old to play a young filly so three foals played the part.
The smallest is Emma who was bleached to pseudo palomino color. A color photo of her pre-bleach in A Pictorial Life Story of Misty. It's hard to tell but it appears the oldest is the foal that was later named Misty II and raffled off. More on her at the bottom of this page on our website: https://www.mistysheaven.com/mistysrelatives.html Misty merchandise was produced in the early 1960s as a tie in to the children's picture book Misty the Wonder Pony. Toy ponies, puzzles, and stick horses like this one have survived to today.
This particular stick horse Misty was recently added to the Misty's Heaven collection. It's in absolutely fantastic shape. The mane, reins, and bell are still there. There's very little wear and tear overall. The kid it belonged to took very good care of it! More Misty memorabilia can be see on our website: https://www.mistysheaven.com/mistymemorabilia.html This handsome stallion is the late Cezanne. He was born on Assateague in 1989 and died in 2012. He was owned by artist Kevin McBride who included him in many paintings. Cezanne sired many Misty descendants through his life with Misty family mares.
We have a section of our website devoted to ponies like Cezanne who are part of the Misty family story, even though they aren't descendants themselves: https://www.mistysheaven.com/mistyfamilyrelatives.html |
