The fiction of Misty of Chincoteague was inspired by real life events, like this one. Maureen and her pony Nancy beating Paul and his pony in the Pony Penning races in 1945. Marguerite Henry attended Pony Penning the next year to research what became the book Misty of Chincoteague.
