Cloudburst was the first foal of Sunshine. His sire is unknown but likely had the same sire as Beebe Breeze since they were foaled the same year. Sunshine was in foal with Cloudburst when she was bought by Dr. Sandy Price and moved to Florida. Sunshine was too young to foal at barely 3 years old, but she thankfully had no issues foaling her son. The colt had been jokingly nicknamed "Freebie" when it was discovered Sunshine was in foal. Cloudburst was born during a storm with rain pounding the roof which he was named after.

Likely because of Sunshine's young age the pair did not strongly bond and Cloudburst weaned himself young. He ran with the Thoroughbred colts on Stolen Hours Farm. Cloudburst was trained to ride for Chris Price. He was later given to a friend of Dr. Price's who worked on Stolen Hours Farm and became a hunter pony.

A chapter titled "Cloudburst" was originally in Marguerite Henry's book Misty's Twilight. A couple of illustrations by Karen Haus Grandpré were drawn of Cloudburst and Sunshine. Ultimately Cloudburst's chapter and story were cut from the final book.
