Until 2015 there had never been any descendants of Misty in the feral herds on Assateague Island. Misty herself was born on Beebe Ranch on Chincoteague and so were her three foals. The Pony Penning auctioneer from 1967 to 1999, Bernie Pleasants, often labeled palomino and buckskin foals from "the Misty line" while auctioning them. He was trying to get a good price on the foals for the fire company. These ponies can't be traced to Misty or any of her family. There were no Misty descendant foals auctioned by the fire company until 2019.
The first Misty descendant on Assateague was WH Windy's Beach Boy. He was purchased by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company in 2015 from Dr. Jim Beach and was released on Assateague. Beach Boy was named in honor of his breeder, and was a replacement for a buyback colt that had died from an illness. |
The additions to the herd were successful for the most part. However, living on a barrier island is a hard life and can take its toll on some ponies and prove hazardous as well. Winter started declining in health only after a few months and was removed and rehomed. Calendar Girl and Assateague born CLG Maureen's Misty Moon disappeared in the winter of 2021. Their fates are unknown, though marsh mud has taken several ponies victim in the past. Foaling on a barrier island is also a risk for mares. Sundance contracted pythiosis in the fall of 2021 and was humanely euthanized. Wildfire was found suffering from hypocalcemia paralysis in May 2024 and was euthanized after it was determined she couldn't recover.
